OUR ACTIVITIES

SEM Italy's training courses aim to enhance teachers' skills in developing talent, creativity, and high potential, addressing double exceptionality, and preventing underachievement and school dropout. They offer teaching strategies to support the individual talents of all students, as well as specific tools and skills to develop the potential of gifted, gifted underachievers, and twice exceptional students in the classroom. Teachers are encouraged and guided in designing and implementing personalized educational and study plans, with a focus on inclusive classrooms.

Training Courses

The training courses offer an overview of the Gifted and Talented Education, Twice Exceptionality, and Gifted Undearachievement models developed over the last fifty years in America, deepening knowledge of the approach to developing talent and individual potential through the use of numerous strategies, including acceleration, enrichment, compaction, curriculum differentiation, and double differentiation. The training program allows students to acquire in-depth knowledge of the SEM Model: an inclusive teaching model for talent development that allows enrichment activities to be integrated into the school curriculum, taking into account the student's strengths and interests, thus developing 21st-century skills.

Contents

The training is divided into two modules with lectures and an interactive, laboratory-based approach, with the option of teacher support and monitoring in the classroom. The courses allow teachers to discover and learn how to use the SEM Model tools in the classroom. In the laboratory-based modules, teachers have the opportunity to use the SEM Model's skills and tools, simulating activities designed by an Enrichment Team for Enrichment, Acceleration, and Consolidation Activities, completing Assessment Forms and Scales for an initial assessment of student potential. It is also possible to request support at schools in the SEM Model implementation process.

Instruments

Teachers are introduced to the Renzulli Learning System: software that allows them to create an Electronic Profile to identify students' strengths, interests, learning styles, and expression styles, facilitating the personalization of learning (www.renzullilearning.com). Teachers can also take the Cebeci Creative Potential Test, which assesses students' creativity by measuring the four main creative dimensions: Fluency, Originality, Elaboration, and Flexibility. With a view to personalizing and differentiating learning, teachers learn how to compact the curriculum, eliminating previously learned content and replacing it with more advanced activities, thus preventing boredom and academic disengagement.

The Training Courses are taught by Dr. Lara Milan, Ph.D. Specialist in Gifted and Talented Education, 2e Specialist and SEM Specialist, titles obtained from the University of Connecticut, the Bridges Graduate School of Cognitive Diversity and the University of California, Irvine, USA. The SEM Model was implemented for the first time in the Italian Public School by Dr. Milan during her PhD in Neuroscience at the University of Pavia.
